Tales from off peak city review

I never actually knew that, when I subscribed to humble choice, I would end up with one of my most anticipated games, Tales from off-peak city. Tales from off-peak city is a surrealist adventure in a new york-like city, where you are assigned to steal a saxophone of high value from the owner of a pizza joint. The story is so bizarre that it is instantly intriguing, and the actual design of this little corner of this city puts this game on my personal top 10 list.

Gameplay
After a quick exposition from two mysterious people on a boat, you are sent to be the assistant of Caetano, the owner of a pizza restaurant and the saxophone you are trying to steal. You are tasked with making pizzas, gathering ingredients, solving puzzles, and uncovering the secrets of off-peak city, which will eventually land you the saxophone. The process of making the pizza is actually quite fun, and hearing what customers have to say about your pizza made to their cryptic orders is quite interesting.

City Design
Right off the bat, this city is absolutely amazing to explore. Every building feels custom made and not something to make the actual city look bigger. All the little details were nice, like the fact that a few of the building are faces, with one of them even talking for a long period of time. The city was quite immersive, and the delivery of pizzas made you explore more of the city that you may not have even found on your own time. This world feels unique in a way that a lot of in-game cities don't, and it is definitely one of the best parts of the game.

Story
Tales from off-peak city doesn't really have a clear story to it, other than that you need to steal the saxophone. You are kind of left to your own devices to figure out what has actually happened. I actually liked this, which gave me the freedom to try to think of what actually has happened. Shortly on in the game, Caetano gets arrested, which makes me think that it has something related to a few customers who turned into board game pieces after they ate the pizza. It is all very weird and bizarre, but very interesting at that.

Graphics and Audio
The graphics of this game are very similar to the creator's other game, the norwood suite, so expect to find adobe fuse created characters and semi-realistic buildings. This didn't bother me at all, but no one is saying that this game is exactly graphically stunning. The music for this game, on the other hand, is absolutely fantastic, as the creator is a cello player who knows what he is doing. According to an interview, he had a neighbor play saxophone for the soundtrack, which also does very well in the score. If this soundtrack gets released anywhere, than I will definitely be buying it.

For Fans Of
1. The Norwood Suite. The surreal nature of off peak city shares a lot with the norwood suite, including the
2. What remains of edith finch. The highly detailed off-peak city will definitely impress fans of games set in highly detailed locations, such as edith finch.
3. The oikospiel opera. For a game that has very good music, if all you wanted to do in off-peak city was walk around and listen to the music, you would still enjoy the experience.
4. Urban Photography. If you like photography in cities, you may enjoy this game by simply buying the camera and taking pictures around town.

Verdict
Tales from off peak city is an excellent adventure game that I will definitely purchase the second volume of(this is only the first volume). The highly detailed world and beautiful soundtrack drew me in like no other game has.

The only way you can get Tales from off peak city currently is by subscribing to humble choice here.

    1. I figured that it might be. It puzzles me what it actually means story-wise, because I am pretty sure I had seen that symbol on the ambulance throughout the city. Caetano seemed fine, which is what made me think that he was being detained for some reason
